Tobago in November

Trinidad and Tobago was awarded Island of the Year at the 2009 Caribbean World International Travel Awards, a justly deserved honor. The awards are considered the Oscars of the Caribbean.

November is a particularly hectic month in Tobago. See what’s in store:

 

• National Tourism Week runs from 22^nd to 25^th November. It’s a time of fun and frolic when the island lets its hair down.
• The precursor to Tourism Week is the 10^th Blue Food Festival, an all day gastronomic adventure of creative indigenous food concoctions. The main ingredient is the root vegetable, Dasheen, known in the US as Taro. It is also known locally as ‘blue food’ because some varieties of the vegetable turn shades of blue and indigo when cooked. This year 15 local chefs will vie for the honors.
• If you’re a golfing buff, the Scarborough Golf Tournament is scheduled to be played from 22^nd to the 23^rd on two stunningly beautiful courses – the Mt. Irvine and Tobago Plantations.
• The last Friday and weekends thereafter starts the build-up to the Christmas season. A musical caravan is brought by the Culture Department to various locations to sing its Season of Joy Christmas carols.
• And of course all the other attractions of the island remain – beautiful   beaches, exotic cuisine, flora and fauna and the warmth of the local people.

Tobago and ‘Swiss Family Robinson’

Many may not know that the 1960 movie ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ was filmed on location in Tobago. Still less known is that Jamaica, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and the Galapagos Islands were considered as possible sites and discarded before the director settled on Tobago. The movie was filmed in 22 weeks at a cost of $4.5 million. Though ideal for filming, the island lacked birds and animals so a colorful cross section of wildlife was flown to Tobago with a small army of trainers. It took five months to build the sets including the shipwreck built out at sea on scaffolding.

Three years earlier the island was selected as location for the 1957 movie ‘Fire down below’ that starred Robert Mitchum, Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth. Bacolet Bay was the setting for much of the film. It is also believed that Tobago was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic ‘Treasure Island’. It isn’t surprising that Tobago was the site of such great literary and entertainment events. Tobago is an island paradise packed in 300 square kilometers of pristine white beaches enclosing verdant hills. Few places on earth compare as an ideal vacation destination to get away from it all.
