Many may not know that the 1960 movie ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ was filmed on location in Tobago. Still less known is that Jamaica, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and the Galapagos Islands were considered as possible sites and discarded before the director settled on Tobago. The movie was filmed in 22 weeks at a cost of $4.5 million. Though ideal for filming, the island lacked birds and animals so a colorful cross section of wildlife was flown to Tobago with a small army of trainers. It took five months to build the sets including the shipwreck built out at sea on scaffolding.

Three years earlier the island was selected as location for the 1957 movie ‘Fire down below’ that starred Robert Mitchum, Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth. Bacolet Bay was the setting for much of the film. It is also believed that Tobago was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic ‘Treasure Island’. It isn’t surprising that Tobago was the site of such great literary and entertainment events. Bird-watching is a little-known but popular pastime in Tobago. Tobago boasts some 220 species of birds of which 90 varieties breed there. Since both islands were once geographically part South America, many of the species are common to those found in Trinidad and on the mainland. Many species migrate for the winter to Tobago from Argentina and other countries, while other migratory birds stop at the island on their long journey south. Timed right, bird watchers have an opportunity to see transitory birds from both, North and South America as well as other parts of the Caribbean. South American birds are most commonly spotted between May to September while their northern cousins visit between October and March. The best months however are during the dry season from January to April. The best time is in the early morning after sunrise and then again an hour or two before sunset.

Tobago is known for six species of humming birds that breed on the island, many of which are also common to Trinidad and nearby Venezuela. The white-tailed sabrewing however is almost exclusively indigenous, never seen in Trinidad and very rarely in Venezuela.

Though sport fishing around Tobago is still in its infancy, it doesn’t diminish the island as an angler’s paradise. Some of the better-known species found round its waters are Barracuda, Grouper, Moray Eel, Parrot fish, Tarpon and Red Snapper. Further out to sea an angler might expect to land Kingfish, Tuna, Shark or even a giant Marlin.

The beaches and the rocks are the most accessible places from which to fish. In fact there is a strong likelihood of a good catch from any sandy beach. Fishing from rocks is more predictable since the species that inhabit rocky areas tend to be territorial and remain there, while those out at sea are more nomadic and follow their prey.

Tobago is host to the annual fishing tournaments that is popular with big game sportsmen from North and South America, and even some aficionados from as far away as Europe. The tournament, staged out of Charlotteville generally in March is held in a spirit of fiercely competitive camaraderie.
